• Text Network Visualization for Psychotherapy

Mental disorders and various self-imposed psychological obstacles often arise because of the lack of choice. Gregory Bateson wrote about the double-bind origin of schizophrenic behavior where “crazy” reaction is simply a way of transcending a limiting situation, when the person sees no other choice. Various psychotherapeutic practices focus on expanding the range of possibilities for the patient, offering more choices than is currently available. Text network visualization can be a useful tool to aid this process. In this case study we are going to demonstrate how it works.

  • Group Profiling Using Text Network Analysis

Any group of people working together has a field of interests, which can be represented as a network of interrelated concepts. Mark might be interested in studying trends and fashion, while Joanne might be into fashion and arts. Identifying those interests and their relation to one another can be very useful for improving the collaboration, indicating the vantage points as well as the structural gaps within the group.

Text network analysis can be used for such quick group profiling. The members of the group can write a short text (or be interviewed) outlining their interests. Alternatively, publicly available texts can be used to gather the data. Next, graph visualization of this aggregated text can help identify the most prominent topics and their relations within that text corpus.

  • Cognitive Drive of Recommender Systems

Recommender systems are the basic building blocks of most online businesses today. They influence the news we read, the posts we see, the things we buy, the music we listen to. Based on the dataset of what is known about us, recommender system finds something we might be interested in. Technically recommender system is a combination of learning algorithms, statistical tools, and recognition algorithms – the areas commonly ascribed to the study of artificial intelligence.
We decided to study this emergent form of consciousness and conduct an attempt to communicate with a recommender system through the interview format. The results are presented in this report.
