• SomaSync: Fractal HRV Tracking & Entrainment

SomaSync is a bodymind metronome entrainer for iPhone and Apple Watch that uses haptic / sonic / visual feedback to tune you into a fractal rhythm. It also provides state-of-the art fractal HRV tracker using the established DFA algorithm that’s used in medical science to assess your body’s resilience and adaptivity.

Instead of focusing on exercising in HR activity zones, you can now optimize your activity to keep your body in a highly adaptive and resilient state using fractal breathing patterns and movement entrainer in SomaSync.

SomaSync helps synchronize your physiology with natural fractal rhythms—patterns found in systems that are both resilient and adaptive (including your heartbeat). It can be used to entrain the body and mind toward greater coherence, adaptivity, balance, and responsiveness.

Users can sync with the fractal rhythm through their breathing, walking, movement, meditative perception, or vagal nerve stimulation.

Research has shown that variability in breathing influences heart rate variability (HRV). Fractal patterns in HRV are linked to healthy, adaptive, and resilient physiological states. A growing body of research indicates that fractal variability has beneficial effects on cardiac function, neurological regulation, and physiological resilience.

Using the app, you can also measure your heartbeat variability (HRV) and its fractality using the the Polar H10 sensor (the leading and most precise consumer sensor used by professional athletes). Polar H10 can be connected directly to your Apple Watch without the need to use an iPhone.

Based on the value of alpha (fractal component calculated using the DFA algorithm) you can see whether your body is in adaptive, tense, regular, or recovering state and adjust your activity accordingly. The optimal state is when the alpha is close to 1 — that means your parasympathetic and sympathetic systems are balanced and influence your body at every scale. A body in an adaptive state is sensitive both to the smallest impulses and bigger perturbations.

The HRV tracker provides optional sonic and haptic feedback (both on iPhone and Apple Watch) so you can feel the state you’re in without the need to constantly check the screen.

You can also get the latest Apple Watch readings (heart beat and HRV) to see the effects of fractal entrainment on your body.

It is possible to export the data (alpha component and RR intervals) as a CSV file for further analysis.

  • How SomaSync Works

Users can choose among multiple presets and SomaSync will generate fractal time series: haptic impulses with variable intervals.

For instance, when a “Deep Breathing” preset is selected, 64 intervals from 300 to 4000 ms long are generated.

The user will then tap the “Start” button and those intervals will be played using the haptic, sonic, and visual feedback.

Users can then inhale with the beat (strong haptic signal), as the circle expands, then exhale with the next beat as the circle contracts. The ticks in between indicate how short or long the signal will be.

It is also possible to use the entrainer to inhale on two haptic impulses and exhale on two haptic impulses using the iPhone app or the Apple Watch app.

Here is a sample of this time series (in seconds):

    1.5038, 1.4653, 2.1644, 2.6164, 1.8863, 1.4294, 0.9300, 1.0983, 1.6494, 1.3314, 0.7651, 1.1289, 0.9494, 1.8338, 2.2381, 1.8817, 0.9312, 1.7097, 2.4933, 3.5482, 4.3000, 1.3400, 1.4294, 1.9326, 0.7709, 0.6155, 0.7314, 2.2977, 1.1965, 0.9639, 2.4470, 1.1497, 2.4648, 0.8755, 1.0854, 2.0187, 3.0844, 2.4025, 3.8922, 3.3890, 3.3225, 3.9369, 3.7882, 3.9109, 2.6903, 2.6937, 1.9883, 1.5639, 1.4631, 3.6347, 3.4077, 2.5435, 2.8147, 2.3978, 1.3527, 1.6779, 1.6827, 2.0017, 1.9842, 1.3742, 0.9222, 0.3000, 1.0467, 2.3127

As you breathe in sync with this rhythm, you will experience around three different modalities: long, deep breaths; shorter, normal breaths; and very short breaths.

You become attentive to three different frequencies: ready to experience the world in a slow, deliberate way, but also ready to respond with a quick exhalation. This makes the body more adaptive and resilient, avoiding mundane state where nothing is changing that can have depressive effects.

At the same time, your HRV is becoming more fractal too (as it’s affected by respiratory system), making you sensitive to both sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, which puts the multiple systems of the body in a more adaptive and resilient state.

Using the SomaSync app you can also measure your HRV’s fractality using the Polar H10 sensor (both with your iPhone or Apple Watch even if the iPhone is not connected).  You can also get the latest heart beat readings and HRV measure from Apple Watch and Polar H10.
